Newborn Session FAQ
What is a Lifestyle Newborn Session?
A lifestyle newborn session serves the purpose of documenting those “hazy” early days of having a new baby in the family, since chances of you remembering them is slim to none. We will capture lots of snuggles, precious baby parts and as much delirious joy as possible during this session. The feel is casual and content. There is little posing by me, but rather a fly on the wall approach.
Where will we shoot a Newborn Lifestyle Session?
My lifestyle newborn session typically takes place in various spots in your home, including but not limited to the family bed and living area. I love to shoot in the master bedroom. There is just something about a new family cuddled up in bed together that is just beautiful.
To prepare for our session, open the blinds/curtains to let in as much light as possible and tidy up any areas you would like to work in. I would recommend removing any clutter from night stands, dressers etc. Also, crank up the heat! Even though it may be warm outside, babies tend to be most comfortable at the shoot if they’re nice and toasty warm. Most clients will raise their thermostat to 78 degrees. If you’re sweating, it’s probably perfect!
How can I make sure my baby is comfortable and cooperative during the shoot?
Newborns are unpredictable and this shoot is all about them. Please do not worry about your baby crying or needing to eat during the shoot—newborn sessions are purposely longer to allow for plenty of breaks, feedings and even diaper/outfit changes. It’s usually a good idea to try and feed your baby right before the session so they’re sleepy and content!
What should I wear?
Looking super relaxed and at your best will make you feel more comfortable during the session. This is an exciting time in your life and we want to capture all of that...so take care of yourself first! As far as clothing goes, keep it simple. Throw in a little color if you’d like, but skip the busy patterns. I suggest cotton knit camis and knit tops -- soft neutrals or pastels. For your husband, the same rules apply. Solid or subtle patterned tops work best. Try to stay away from prominent logos or writing on clothing.
What can I do to prepare for the session?
This is such a special time in your family’s life. There will be so many emotions during the shoot—love, excitement, angst, wonder, amazement. It will be tough, but try to relax! Moms tend to stress out because this is a new experience and because they want things to be “perfect.” I will take your baby’s lead and allow him/ her to be the focus of the shoot. If your baby cries, or poops, it’s okay. I promise! Just focus on relaxing and cuddling with your sweet new addition and I will create images that you will cherish forever!
